Students inspired by RAF success
A former Collyer’s student returned to the college virtually last week for an ‘inspiring’ talk after landing a role in the RAF.
Jacob Tasker spoke to 50 students from the Horsham sixth form about achieving a place on RAF Initial Officer Training in May, with the intention to follow a career leading a team protecting the UK airspace.
During the chat-show style session – hosted by deputy principal Steve Martell via Zoom – students asked Jacob about volunteering, air cadets, work experience, aptitude tests and RAF selection panels.
Jacob said: “It was great to give something back and I really enjoyed speaking to the class about my experiences. The opportunity to work as a Collyer’s Ambassador with Steve and his team proved valuable in my selection panel interviews and the support I received from the Collyer’s Association, to enable me to make a parachute jump in 2019, will also never be forgotten!”
Jacob also spoke about broader opportunities available within the RAF, aiming high, and the practicalities of gaining a foundation degree during Officer Training.
He said: “During a long and testing selection process, I used many of the skills harnessed at Collyer’s, especially the grit and determination required when studying for my A Levels.
“Steve and my teachers at Collyer’s always believed in me and encouraged me to never give up on my dreams. They were right!”
Deputy principal Steve Martell said: “It was great to welcome Jacob back. He was a wonderful student at Collyer’s and worked so hard to fulfil his ambassadorial duties.
“After the session the group said they found him inspiring. I am certainly inspired by Jacob and can’t wait to invite him back so we can hear the latest installment of his success story!”
