Happy anniversary Sophie and Matt

-

Acircle of 18 close family and special friends gathered in a woodland glade among the bluebells to witness Sophie and Matt’s heartfelt wedding ceremony. A lantern stood on a rustic table in which a candle was lit for those unable to be present for whatever reason, in particular Matt’s father.

I welcomed everyone to the beautiful wooded surroundings, recalling the history and folklore.

A love poem written by Matt’s father was read in his honour.

The elements of earth, air, fire, and water were welcomed into our midst.

I called upon the representatives to speak their part in turn: North – earth – read by Laura South – fire -–read by Kev East – air – read by Jason West – water – read by Maurice I had sent the couple a list of questions to inspire them to consider their relationship and vision for the future. Both, came back to me privately with answers; these I read out, each hearing the words written by the other for the first time.

Sophie, this is what Matt wrote about you….

Matt, this is what Sophie wrote about you...

I blessed the rings: “These rings are daily reminders of your love and commitment to one another.” Sophie and Matt exchanged rings.

Hand-fasting is an ancient tradition in which the bride and groom’s wrists are bound symbolising their indissoluble love. Sophie chose a silver cord as in the book Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince. The couple liked the analogy.

I wrapped the silver cord around Sophie and Matt’s wrists as they spoke in turn their heart-felt vows to one another.

Sophie and Matt were pronounced: ‘husband and wife’ with an invitation to kiss.

Sophie’s sisters served cake and wine, a tradition from the past when clans gathered for such an occasion; the sharing of food and drink signifying a truce and goodwill.

I thanked the four elements and read a Final Blessing.

The newly-weds left the circle by jumping over a broom which symbolised the sweeping clean of old ties and creating a new life together. Everyone cheered and showered them in rose petals.

A heart-warming lunch followed at a local pub. Later, the couple legalised their marriage at a hotel where they partied with family and friends well into the evening.
