Rotary club appoints new president

A new president has been appointed at the Storrington and Pulborough District Rotary Club.

Paul Weaver has taken on the role after being an active member of the club for five years after joining within a week of moving to Storrington from Hertfordshire alongside his wife, Anna, who is curently club secretary.

Paul’s primary objective is to get the club back to working on all cylinders both for members themselves and to help in the community to alleviate, where they can, the after-effects of such a long lockdown.

The 15 months of restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic meant members had to meet virtually on a weekly basis instead, but they continued to be active in the community, including creating a new project to provide Christmas sacks to families in need.

The club has also recently agreed to take over the bookstall that Chanctonbury Lions Club have been running for many years in the centre of Storrington and at other outlets, which Rotary says will be a major commitment but will be worth the effort in terms of providing something for the community on a Saturday morning.

Paul said: “We are looking forward to returning to our other activities, including film nights at Sullington Village Hall, car boot sales in the library car park and helping both the young and the old in the community.

“It is a privilege to be leading our Club in these challenging times.”

Paul was born and raised in South London, and went to university in Exeter, where he met his wife, Anna.

Paul qualified as an actuary in the 1970s and took an overseas posting in South Africa with an insurance company for six years before returning to England in 1983 and settling in Harpenden.

He moved into consulting in his specialist area of pensions actuarial work in 1985, founding his own firm in 1992. He still works a little today, but in the role of pension scheme trustee, rather than scheme actuary.
