In a week of points and pounds for Pulborough Bowls Club, the first game of the week against Bognor at home in the Brooks Motors League yielded two valuable league points.

Skip John Brown, lead Jane Gray and number two George Lewis won their rink by 14-12.

With Storrington unable to find nine players to fill a team to travel to Pulborough on Thursday night, the next match was at home to Pagham in the West Sussex League on Saturday.

Four triples played 18 ends of quality bowls, with three being victorious and securing 8/10 points for the home side.

Skips Ray Hall and John Brown both managed to encourage their teams to a nine-shot win, whilst Steve Adsett, Neil Monument and Ian Younger went one step further, by scoring heavily throughout to finish 15 shots ahead of the Pagham trio! The final result was an impressive 81-61 win.

Sunday saw the 7th annual Penny Rhoder fundraiser for MacMillan. With a target to exceed £500, events began with a Spider, where bowlers pay to aim one bowl at a target in the centre of the green, whilst having one foot in the ditch.

Roger Jupp managed to win for the second time and took away a bottle of gin for his troubles. Shortly afterward 12 triples took to the green to play three sessions of six ends against random opposition.

The teams were a mixture of experienced players, new bowlers and family and friends of Jeff and Tara Davy, Penny Rhoder’s husband and daughter.

With the volume out on the green hitting new highs and the banter flowing freely, Melvin Green, with Ann McGeachie and Mark Greenfield in support, managed three wins and a plus-13 shot difference to come third.

Paul Leatherbarrow, Martyn Ralph and John Walsh won three games to score +14 shots and Steve Adsett, Tara Davy and Jenny Ralph aced their final game gaining a further 13 shots to secure victory with a +18 shot difference!

The winners and runners up trophies were donated by past member Mick Ralph and presented by Penny’s sisters to the winning trio, which included Penny’s daughter, Tara.

With the extensive raffle of donated prizes taking over an hour to complete, the Spider, an auctioned painting and bacon rolls being snapped up by the players and visitors, Pulborough BC, friends and sponsors have so far raised in excess of £700 for MacMillan, which far exceeds all expectations.

Well done to everyone who gave their time and money to Remember Penny Rhoder and support such a worthy cause.

Pulborough next play at Pagham on Friday, at home to Stedham on Saturday, from 2pm.

Spectators are always welcome.
