Will you win the next green hub draw?

- By John Fraser Preston

What fun! Seasonal festivities certainly came early last December, when we won the Sussex Green Hub’s fabulous Great Green Hamper full of eco-friendly, local, and ethically produced products, all kindly provided by John Lewis Horsham. Packed in a wicker hamper, the eco products ranged from everyday household items through to purely indulgence goodies, all of which were eagerly unpacked by our six-year-old granddaughter.

Whilst most of the items were unknown to us, there were a few old favourites included. We already use Method cleaner for the kitchen and bathroom. Method products are plant-based and anti-bacterial and come in some fascinating aromas. We particularly like the orange yuzu all-purpose cleaner. The EcoVibe cleaning and homecare stuff, whilst not the cheapest on the market, is worth paying the extra as it provides greener sustainable non-plastic alternatives such as real bristle bushes and plant-based sponges. All EcoVibe products are supplied in plasticfree packaging and support many small UK businesses. Cutting back on plastic pollution is important to us so we were keen to use the Earthkind Sea Saver micro filter to wash our synthetics and help to reduce the amount of microfibres and plastics entering our oceans. Another well-used favourite which prevents single-use plastics is the Circular & Co reusable cup with its simple push down to open and close top. Circular & Co are based in Perranporth and make all their recycled products from waste materials.

We were very pleased that the eco-hamper also included items for ‘sustenance’ (aka beer!) such as the Crumbs Brewing Beer which is cleverly made from leftover bread. Another favourite was the Rye Ruby which we’ll certainly be looking out for. And as to the Cottage Delight Chutneys – what can one say – all gone! These chutneys were very zingy and tasty and we particularly liked the sweet apple. Definitely to be added to our shopping list and also recommended to friends. A most welcome surprise was the Isle of Wight Distillery gin, a company which is working hard towards being carbon net zero. The Mermaid gin flavours are all uniquely subtle in taste and can be easily enjoyed with or without tonic.

And as to pure indulgence it would be hard to beat the Neom sleep bath foam, a beauty product which is vegan, cruelty free, and which doesn’t contain artificial additives. Treat yourself!

Amazingly all this for completing the simple Sussex Green Hub’s Small Green Steps survey! If you’d like the chance to win a hamper, we urge you to complete the next survey. We know we will!

Visitors attending the monthly ‘Carbon Clinic’ for personally tailored advice are also entered in the 2022 draw.
