Annual Riverside Walk in aid of the Parkinson’s UK Horsham branch

-

his Saturday, September 11, is the seventh annual Riverside Walk. It will start at 10am from

New House Farm, Old Crawley Road, Faygate, RH12 4RU – gates to the car park open from 9am.

The chosen charity this year is Parkinson’s UK through the Parkinson’s Horsham branch.

They are hoping walkers will help raise funds by donating or by being sponsored, but it is not a condition of joining the walk.

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that causes problems in the brain which get worse over time. People with Parkinson’s don’t have enough of the chemical dopamine as some of the nerve cells that make it have died.

There are lots of different treatments, therapies and support available to help manage the condition and researchers are working hard to develop new and better treatments – and one day a cure – but financial support is needed to achieve this.

As well as sponsorship collecting buckets, card-reading machines will be on the route at the refreshment stops.

The emphasis is that everyone

Tenjoys the walk as this is the first aim of the day, however, in previous years, it has been found that people can be very generous towards a local cause.

There will be ample space for cars at New House Farm and participants are asked to arrive in good time. Toilets will be open before the start of the walk and in the afternoon at New House Farm.

The route is 13-mile (21 km) and will be walked in a clockwise direction. A free programme will show the route on the day as well as being signed.

If you have taken part before you should note that a diversion has been added along Lambs Farm Road to avoid the hazardous road crossing on the A264 dual carriageway.

When arriving at Rusper Road stewards will suggest turning right and following this road past Littlehaven Station before turning left into Lambs Farm Road. The end of this road meets Crawley Road and, using the traffic island, cross to the other side to proceed along an alleyway to the left of The Norfolk Arms.

This comes out on Sycamore Avenue and continues the opposite side to arrive at Beech Road xar park. From here cross the green to follow the trees on your left and meet up with the field that was crossed near the start of the walk. Follow the pathway back across the field, through the trees and down the hill to Old Crawley Road and left back to New House Farm.

There will be a lunch stop at Chesworth Farm where sandwiches, crisps, snack bars and soft drinks can be purchased.

The afternoon refreshment stop is at Warnham Nature Reserve where light refreshments can be had. Dogs are not allowed in the Reserve.

Everyone who completes the walk at New House Farm by 5pm can collect a certificate.

The distance from the start at New House Farm car park at 10am; Chesworth Farm lunch between 11.30am and 12.30pm; Warnham Nature Reserve for refreshments 1.30pm - 3pm and on to New House Farm to obtain walk certificate up until 5pm.

There is a walk leader who heads the main group but if you are a quick walker, you may overtake her. The Back Marker usually walks at the pace of the slowest walker.
