County’s best amateur golfers compete

-

Twenty Sussex golf clubs sent their best women’s amateur pair to compete in the three day County Ladies Golf Association Scratch Foursomes hosted by West Sussex Golf Club in Pulborough.

Competitors enjoyed the challenge of the fine heathland course and were treated to sunny, breezy days and frosty mornings. The eight teams – from West Sussex, Nevill, Bognor B, Royal Ash down Forest A& B, Worthing A& Band I field–all qualified for the quarter finals.

In the semi-finals, defending champions West Sussex fell to a 5 & 4 defeat to Nevill who won the trophy in 2016.

Seventeen year old Maisie Hasall, who heads off to play college golf in the US next year, was matched superbly by partner Rosie Jenner, playing against the previous winners.

The other semi-final saw Worthing A take on Worthing B. Runners-up in 2021 and champions in 2019, Worthing have history in the competition.

The match went to the 18th hole, where the Worthing B pair of Emma Bullock and Denise Moor triumphed over their clubmates to progress to the final, beating former English Senior player Paula Carver and her partner Delyth Roberts.

An exciting third place playoff saw Worthing A seek revenge for their 2021 final defeat to West Sussex.

It was a tense scene as a crowd formed around the final green to see the deciding putts. They dropped the way of Worthing, who claimed third place.

Focus shifted to the final between Worthing B and The Nevill.

It was another high-quality match in which Worthing B battled valiantly in challenging, windy conditions, but it was Sussex County Junior Captain Hasall and her ever reliable partner Rosie Jenner who triumphed.

Some impressive long hitting, superb iron play and tidy short game from both, saw them take the final with an imperious 4 & 3 victory that concluded on the par three 15 th. Following J en ner’ s well struck iron to the heart of the green Hasall just had to cosy the putt up to the hole which she did with no mistake.

Nevill beat Cottesmore, Pyecombe, Bognor and West Sussex en route to the final and are the 2022 Scratch Foursomes champions. Congratulations go to all who took part in an event played in the true spirit of the game. The Sussex County Ladies Golf Association has 3,800 members playing at 57 clubs.
