Morrell was adamant he wanted to play – Holden
BRISTOL City head coach Dean Holden has explained why the club have sold midfielder Joe Morrell to Luton Town.
The 23-year-old tied up a move to the Hatters on Thursday. A £200,000 fee has been mooted, but it is understood the Robins are set to receive more than that figure, as Morrell links up with countryman Nathan Jones, the boss at Kenilworth Road.
Asked about the transfer, the head coach said ‘the time was right’.
“We’re very unbalanced in that area (midfield) of the team,” said
Holden. “Joe’s been at the club a long time and is a good footballer – of course he’s playing for Wales and performing well, and we know what Joe’s capabilities are.
“We had an honest conversation as I did the exact same with Sammie Szmodics and Niclas Eliasson – he came to see me, where do I see him, and we talked about how much game time he may or may not get.
“And he was adamant that he wanted to go and play some football games. The club have secured a deal and got a transfer fee and now he moves to the Championship and a good club. We wish him well.”
There was also a nod towards the competition from the boss.
He added: “The absolute answer is that Tyreeq Bakinson has come in in pre-season and gone ahead of quite a few players, I have to say.”
Morrell’s father Dave took to social media to give the view from the Morrell camp.
Writing on Twitter, he explained that Holden had been exemplary in his conduct.
“Obviously a sad day, not just for Joe, but us all,” he said. “Couldn’t quite fully complete the pathway.
“Right time to move on for Joe and City. Manager has been first class in his honesty and understanding.
“Good luck for the season. Roll on the December 29 (when City go to Luton).”
City, meanwhile, will look to maintain their position at the top of the Sky Bet Championship when they visit Barnsley this afternoon.
