Tributes after ex-council leader dies
TRIBUTES have been paid to an “outstanding” and
“distinguished” Somerset council leader who has passed away following a long illness.
Tim Carroll served as leader of South Somerset District Council for two separate terms spanning the 2000s and early 2010s.
As well as representing Wincanton and later Yeovil on the council for 20 years, he also served on Somerset County Council for 12 years in various positions.
The chairmen of both existing councils have led the tributes, stating he will be “sorely missed” and praising Mr Carroll’s “great intellect, wit and charm”.
Mr Carroll served on the district council between 1995 and 2015, representing the Wincanton ward for 16 years and then the Yeovil West ward from 2011.
He served as council leader between 2001 and 2004, and again from 2006 to 2011.
Current council chairman Paul Maxwell said: “Tim was a distinguished council leader, who commanded respect from all members and officers.
“He was a man of great intellect, wit and charm.
“I had the pleasure of working with him on both the district and county council where both his wisdom and guidance were invaluable.
“He will be remembered with fondness and will be sorely missed. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
Council leader Val Keitch added: “Tim was an outstanding leader and councillor. He was well-respected and the epitome of what a councillor should be.”
In addition to his district duties, Mr Carroll also represented the Wincanton and Bruton division on Somerset County Council between 1993 and 2005, serving as portfolio holder for the environment and transport.
Council chairman Nigel Taylor said: “Tim Carroll was a longserving councillor on both the county and district councils, working tirelessly on behalf of the community.
“I would like to extend my condolences, on behalf of the council, to his family, friends, and colleagues. He will be much missed.”
