I’ve been on a big learning curve, says boss Duff

-

MICHAEL Duff admits that he has “crammed quite a lot” into three years as Cheltenham Town manager, writes Jon Palmer.

The former Burnley stalwart took over as boss following the departure of Gary Johnson in 2018 and has taken the Robins from near the foot of League Two into the division above.

Ahead of today’s test at former Premier League side Charlton, boss Duff said: “(It’s been a) big learning curve. I’ve been lucky. I walked into a good group.

“(In the past three years) I’ve not won for ten games, we’ve been in a relegation battle, we have had a failed play-off campaign and we’ve won a league, all in a pandemic.

“So in terms of learning and things you have to deal with, I have crammed quite a lot into three years.

“It’s going to be a completely different challenge this year, survival being the main aim.

“I’ve enjoyed it. It probably couldn’t have gone any better really, in the big scheme of things.

“If someone had said when I took the job that in three years you’ll be playing Charlton, I don’t think anyone would have believed it, unless they’d have come down to League Two. So, it’s been good.

“I’ve had a lot of help along the way, a little bit of luck as you always need along the way, but a lot of hard work has gone into it as well. I am the guy that has to stand up in front of you, but there are a hell of a lot of people behind me.”

■ High-flying Swindon will aim to continue their fine start to the season at home to Port Vale today.

Ben Garner’s men will be the favourites for the clash, but Vale were able to shock Forest Green a couple of weekends ago.
