‘Buy lo­cal’ to help our own food pro­duc­ers

COVID-19 has brought into sharp fo­cus the im­por­tance to our health in re­la­tion to food qual­ity, se­cu­rity, stan­dards and an­i­mal wel­fare.

Many peo­ple I meet have a stronger aware­ness of what we eat and where it comes from. As con­sumers, we have never been so well in­formed.

In­ten­sive farm­ing prac­tices have been shown to have a strongly neg­a­tive ef­fect on our en­vi­ron­ment and is prej­u­di­cial to an­i­mal wel­fare in par­tic­u­lar. Th­ese prac­tices have no place in our coun­try where we al­ready pro­duce most of our ba­sic needs. In Devon, we are well placed to build a bet­ter, stronger and sus­tain­able food sys­tem by buy­ing lo­cal, waste less, sup­port our farm­ers
