Police find body in the search for missing student
ABODY has been found in the search for missing University of Bath student Alec Unsgaard. Officers discovered the body in the Bathampton area on Wednesday morning, and while formal identification has not taken place, police believe it to be Alec.
His family have been informed and officers are providing them with support.
The 21-year-old was last seen at the university campus on Friday, September 18.
An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesperson said: “The death is not currently being treated as suspicious but officers will continue to carry out enquiries on behalf of the coroner.
“We’d like to thank both the public and the media for their help in publicising our appeals to find Alec and our thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time.”
Alec’s parents had previously said: “Alec is attending the University of Bath to study international relations and politics and he was looking forward to moving from home to try something different, in a new environment.
“He’s worked very hard for two years to save the money to go. He loves books and reading and is very sporty; he loves to play football. He is a very caring person and is much loved by his family and friends.”
On Friday, the body of another University of Bath student, Martin Bowers, was found in the River Avon in Bristol.
Mr Bowers, from Staffordshire, had been missing since lunchtime on Saturday, September 19.
Police are not linking the two cases. The university said in a statement that it would be doing all it could to support his family.
Professor Ian White, vice-chancellor of the university, said: “The news from police that they have found a body in the search for Alec is extremely distressing and our thoughts continue to be with his family at this saddest of times.
“We will continue to assist them in any way we can, and to engage and support all others involved.
“If any of our students have been affected by this news, we urge them to reach out to one of the many sources of support available to them.”
