Huge opposition to plans for housing development in town
PLANS to build up to 70 new homes in Bruton have met huge opposition from locals.
Southern & Regional Developments wants to build a housing estate on land north of Brewham Road, to the east of the town, in a new development called Brewham Rise.
It is one of two developments being planned in the Brewham Road area of the town, with a separate application for 60 more homes to the south of the road also being considered.
Bruton Town Council held an extraordinary meeting this week where councillors voted to recommend refusal of the plans, citing concerns over a lack of consultation from planning consultants Claremont, the lack of a new health care facility in the plans, the increase in traffic that the development would generate and fears that the land would be prone to flooding.
The concerns of the council have been shared by residents in the town. Of the 99 public comments left on South Somerset District Council’s planning website in relation to the application, just one is in favour.
Jo McPhee-Clarke said: “I think that building houses on this land is a terrible idea.
“The green spaces around Bruton are getting less and less and the countryside is getting eaten up.”
In a statement, a spokesman for consultants Claremont Planning, on behalf of Southern & Regional Developments Ltd, said: “The proposed new development presents the opportunity to provide a highquality development of much-needed homes.”
South Somerset District Council will now make a final decision.
