Villages being ruined by speculators
I, together with my neighbours, have been increasingly concerned about the local planning regulations which should be a concern for all of us.
People seem to think that they can buy a property and do pretty much what they like with it, unconcerned with the local area or environment or it seems conservation areas in particular. Ancient villages, of which Cornwall has in abundance, are being destroyed by people from other parts of the country, who seem hell bent in making their new home just like the one they have just left.
Cornwall Council Planning Department seems to rubber stamp these plans with relish, with little concern for the local inhabitants, or the way of life, that has been enjoyed by the many.
We have a case in my village of Mousehole, where people have bought a property and have gutted it, while submitting a planning application which is pending. What happens if the planning is turned down? Will the council ask them to reinstate the building to its former state? No – I don’t think so.
Conservation areas seem to be a prime target for these speculators, who have no interest in the long term effects of the damage done to the local environment.
The sewer system in the village is at breaking point, and has not seen any real improvement for over 150 years, and just cannot cope in the summer time.
The planners have destroyed St Ives, and they are hell bent on seeing off the rest of the county. I am surprised that some of these Cornish villages have not had their harbours filled in to make car parks for our guests.
When will this madness end? Well, you have a great opportunity in May to choose your representative on the council. Choose wisely.
