Ex-Swindon boss Wellens leaves Salford

-

FORMER Swindon boss Richie Wellens has parted company with Salford City just over a week after winning the Papa John’s Trophy.

The Sky Bet League Two club only appointed the 40-year-old in early November, following his departure from the Robins, but a run of four games without a win has proved his undoing.

A club statement read: “Salford have parted company with Richie Wellens by mutual consent. We would like to thank Richie for his time and effort and wish him well for the future. An announcement about a new manager will be made in due course.”

Graham Alexander was sacked in October and replaced by

Wellens, above, who dropped down from League One to take charge.

Just ten days ago, Wellens led Salford to a penalty shoot-out win over Portsmouth in the delayed final of last season’s Papa John’s Trophy. Their reign as holders lasted one day before Sunderland clinched this season’s trophy.

However, that Wembley win was followed by a home draw with struggling Colchester and then a 2-0 loss at table-topping Cheltenham on Saturday.

Wellens’ replacement in the County Ground dugout, John Sheridan admitted last week that he was “considering his position”, but after decided to stay on, he saw the Robins triumph 2-0 at Fleetwood on Saturday.

That victory gives Swindon a much-needed boost ahead of tonight’s League One clash at Bristol Rovers, with both sides just above the relegation zone on goal difference alone.
