Epic 5-hour live music trip awaits fans of Worthy Farm

- RICHARD BACHE richard.bache@reachplc.com

FOR the first time in history a major musical event at Worthy Farm can be guaranteed to be mud-free.

That is because the organisers of the Glastonbury festival have announced a global livestream event to be held at the Somerset farm in May.

Without leaving the comfort of the living room on Saturday, May 22, music fans can watch performances from well-known sites around the farm, including the Stone Circle.

And instead of retiring afterwards to a tent in a packed field miles away, those who have paid £20 for a ticket to the five-hour show have no more arduous a trip than up the stairs.

Artists such as Coldplay, Damon Albarn, Jorja Smith, Haim, Wolf Alice, Michael Kiwanuka and more will be part of the event, organiser Emily Eavis said.

The annual festival is one of the West’s biggest events and is worth tens of millions of pounds to the regional economy.

Thousands of people who work in the creative economy – many of whom work on a freelance basis – have taken a huge financial hit during the pandemic.

Glastonbury and the wider summer festival circuit is often the most lucrative time of the year for performers, set-builders, sound engineers and thousands of others who help create the magic festivals rely on.

The organisers said that a limited edition line-up poster for the event is available, with proceeds going to Stagehand, the live production welfare and benevolent fund which is helping crew who have fallen into the gaps in Government financial support during the pandemic.

Speaking to Dermot O’Leary on

BBC Radio 2 yesterday, Emily Eavis said it is going to be “taking you on a five-hour journey through an evening at Worthy Farm with artists, so it’s going to be like the festival but without people.

“We’re going to take you on a journey through all of those spots that you know, you recognise from Worthy Farm... We’re going to build into this whole epic journey around the site into the night.”

Describing the event, a continuous livestream of music, as “ambitious”, Eavis added: “We’re very excited to be able to show the farm in a way that people have never really seen it, with these incredible artists.”

In January this year organisers announced that Glastonbury had been cancelled for a second year in a row because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Asked about the festival returning in 2022, Eavis said: “We’ll be back next year, that’s the plan, we’re working on that and fingers crossed we’ll see you there”.

Tickets for Live At Worthy Farm are on sale now and cost £20.
