Fury as ‘yobs’ leave parks full of rubbish

-

A FORMER mayor has joined the chorus of residents who have hit out at “yobs” who left parks across the West full of rubbish for councils to clean up on Wednesday morning.

There was a “festival” atmosphere on Tuesday as hundreds flocked to open spaces across the region to meet with friends in the sunshine as lockdown restrictions eased slightly.

But residents such as Amanda Grieves who woke up to rubbish mountains the day after crowds gathered to enjoy the hottest day of the year were far from pleased.

Former Cheltenham mayor Barbara Driver retweeted pictures of the clean-up in the town and said: “Well done each and every one of them that cleaned it up.

“Not the yobs who left it there.” Jason Scriven said he was shocked by the amount of rubbish at Monpelier Gardens, Sandford Parks and Pittville Park in Cheltenham and was told extra workers had to be drafted in to help clear them.

“They have left them in such a state, it’s almost like a festival was there,” said Jason.

Amanda said Montpelier Gardens was a terrible sight yesterday morning with endless amounts of take- away boxes, beer cans, bottles, plastic, bags strewn over the grass, around tree and, under benches.

She said the state of the parks belies the fact that the country is talking about how we all need to be environmentally friendly and socially responsible and does not fit in with calls to look after the planet and wildlife.

Gloucester City Police tweeted a picture of a park bench surrounded by litter and wrote: “Let’s all enjoy our open spaces but please remember to dispose of your rubbish responsibly.

“Don’t leave it for others to clear up.”

It was a similar picture in other parts of the West – with huge mountains of waste being left on the Downs and at the Harbourside in Bristol.
