Dyson unveils new smarter air purifier

A NEW air purifier containing sensing technology able to destroy potentially dangerous indoor pollutants has been unveiled by Dyson.

The Wiltshire-founded technology firm says its new purifier range can create cleaner home environments through its ability to capture pollutants such as formaldehyde.

A colourless gas pollutant, formaldehyde can be found in furniture and wooden products, insulating materials and DIY materials such as paint, wallpapers and household cleaning products and can cause health issues through prolonged exposure.

Dyson says its new Purifier Formaldehyde range can precisely monitor levels of the pollutant in the home and remove it as needed using a new solid-state sensor and Dyson algorithms.

The company said that the Covid-19 pandemic and the increased amount of time spent indoors because of lockdown restrictions meant it was important to pay even greater attention to air quality indoors.

“The off-gassing tendency of formaldehyde means that it can go undetected in a home for years. Dyson has engineered a machine that provides accurate and successful sensing, capture and destruction of the pollutant,” Alex Knox, Dyson’s vice president of environmental care, said.

“Our solid-state sensor doesn’t dry out over time, lasting the lifetime of the machine.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has raised global awareness about the air that we breathe and Dyson’s commitment to providing cleaner air through innovation and technology remains at the forefront of our mission.”

According to the firm, the new purifier – which cost £599 – will be able to capture and remove 99.95% of particles from the air, including allergens, bacteria and pollen and mould spores.
