1967: Foinavon became a 100-1 winner of the Grand National at Aintree. He avoided a pile-up at the 23rd fence, which caused most of the field to fall or refuse, to come home a comfortabl­e winner.

1990: Nick Faldo won his second successive Masters title. For the second year running, the competitio­n went to a play-off - Faldo again winning at the second extra hole, this time at the expense of Raymond Floyd.

2012: Sir Chris Hoy won gold in the men’s keirin at the Track Cycling World Championsh­ips in Melbourne.
