Glovers slip to meek loss at Wrexham

WREXHAM ....................... 3 YEOVIL TOWN ................. 0

YEOVIL had no answer to play-off hopefuls Wrexham in the National League as the Welsh side settled this encounter inside the opening half an hour.

Shaun Pearson set the tone as he met a corner to head home with just nine minutes gone.

Luke Young and Jordan Davies also struck in the opening 29 minutes and Yeovil could not muster a response.

Dean Keates’ side stayed sixth with five games left, while the Glovers ended the day where they started it, ten places below the hosts in 16th position.

Yeovil forward Joe Quigley said afterwards: “We didn’t stand up to be counted when we went 1-0 down. I think that’s something we’ve got to learn as a team – we can’t just drop our heads, there’s still 80 minutes to go.”

Wrexham boss Dean Keates said: “It was an open game, but we kept going, stuck to the game plan and got our rewards.

“The lads were outstanding, efficient, organised, drilled and we kept the game at our tempo.

“My biggest bugbear is it wasn’t 7-0 and that’s without me showing any disrespect to Yeovil. I said to the players ‘We were a little bit sloppy in technique’.”

The National League promotion race remains on a knife-edge after leaders Torquay were held to a goalless draw by Bromley.

The Gulls are two points clear of Sutton with three games left to play, while the pursuers have an extra match in hand.

Stockport are six points behind Torquay with a game in hand and a home game against the Gulls.

Two of those three sides are likely to bypass the first phase of the play-offs should they miss out on the automatic promotion slot, with Hartlepool, who have lost their last two games, looking set to secure their berth in fourth.

The remaining three play-off places are most likely between Halifax, Wrexham, Notts County, Chesterfield and Bromley. Wrexham: Lainton, Vassell, Pearson, Kelleher,
