Familiar feel despite new era at Toon

-

NEWCASTLE’S new era began with a familiar home defeat as Spurs came from behind to win 3-2 in a Premier League match which was suspended due to a medical emergency in the crowd.

Callum Wilson headed the Toon in front inside two minutes, but Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min turned things around by half-time. Eric Dier’s late own goal was not enough for the home side.

In yesterday’s earlier match, West Ham beat Everton 1-0 with an Angelo Ogbonna header.

In the pick of Saturday’s games, Leicester brought Manchester United’s record away run to an end with a 4-2 triumph.

Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka scored late on to condemn United to a first away League defeat since January 2020.

Mason Greenwood and Youri Tielemans traded first-half goals as United took the lead before Caglar Soyuncu and Marcus Rashford struck after the break.

In Saturday’s early kick-off, Roberto Firmino, below, scored a hat-trick and Mo Salah scored for the eighth consecutive game as Liverpool demolished Watford 5-0 on Claudio Ranieri’s return to English football. Sadio Mane had opening the scoring with his 100th Premier League goal.

Wolves claimed an astonishing derby win at Aston Villa with three goals in the final ten minutes capping a stunning 3-2 comeback.

Ruben Neves’ deflected free kick snatched the points in added time after Romain Saiss and Conor Coady had levelled for Bruno Lage’s side. Danny Ings and John McGinn had put Villa in control before the late drama.

Armando Broja struck his maiden Premier League goal as Southampton picked up a first win of the season by deservedly beating Leeds 1-0 at St Mary’s, while Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne were on target as champions Manchester City claimed a 2-0 win over Burnley.

It finished 0-0 at Carrow Road between bottom-of-the-table side Norwich and visiting Brighton, while in Saturday’s late game Edouard Mendy’s stunning string of saves ensured Chelsea climbed back to the top of the table, with Ben Chilwell’s strike sealing a 1-0 win at luckless Brentford.

Arsenal host Crystal Palace this evening (8pm).
