Yeovil win shootout to book tie with Yate or Dover

-

YEOVIL Town advanced in the Emirates FA Cup in dramatic fashion after a penalty shootout victory over Weymouth at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

As in Saturday’s draw, Yeovil took the lead in the first half as Matthew Worthington flicked a header beyond a stranded Ross Fitzsimons, before Josh McQuoid levelled the affair in 87th minute.

Despite a late penalty miss in regulation time from Joe Quigley after Adi Yussuf ’s effort on goal was adjudged to have been blocked with a hand, the Glovers were able to secure a 2-1 victory from the subsequent penalty shootout.

Despite misses from Ben Seymour and Tom Knowles, Weymouth missed three of their first four penalties whilst Yussuf and Dale Gorman converted to secure a memorable victory for Town against their near neighbours.

Meanwhile, Yate Town issued a statement late on Tuesday night after their FA Cup fourth qualifying round replay at home to Dover Athletic was postponed following floodlight failure.

Yate say Dover declined to play because the problem was not fixed by an 8.30pm deadline, and the clubs will now try again on Tueday (7.45pm). The winners will have a home tie against Yeovil in the first round on Saturday November 6.

Yate’s statement read: “It was therefore agreed that if the floodlights could not be repaired and turned on by 20:30 the match would be postponed.

“At 20:34 the lights were fixed, the referee consulted with the FA to seek agreement that the match could go ahead, the FA confirmed this providing both teams were happy ... Yate were content to play, however

Dover Athletic stated that it was past the 20:30 deadline and therefore they were not prepared to play ... . ”

Elsewhere, Bristol Manor Farm manager Lee Lashenko and club official Vaughan Rickard havebeen given until Tuesday 2 November to respond to FA charges over the unsavoury scenes following the FA Trophy tie against Paulton Rovers earlier this month.

In video footage, widely viewed across social media Lashenko was captured shouting at and walking towards the match referee Richard Lawrence

■ Manager Steve Bruce has left Newcastle United by mutual consent just 13 days after the Saudi Arabiabacked £305m takeover of the club was completed.

The 60-year-old, above, took charge of his 1,000th match as a manager in Sunday’s 3-2 defeat by Tottenham - his only game as Magpies boss under the new owners.

Bruce said there had been “highs and lows” and that he hoped the new owners could “take the club forward”.

Graeme Jones will take interim charge of the Premier League side.

Newcastle said the appointment of a new manager “will be announced in due course”.
