MoD probe as date was ‘smuggled’ at barracks

-

MINISTRY of Defence officials have reportedly launched an investigation into an alleged security breach after claims a dating app lover was sneaked into an Army barracks in Wiltshire in the boot of a car.

The civilian in question claims two soldiers used knowledge of CCTV “black spots” and guard rotations to get him into bases for visits late last year.

He alleges he was left for hours to “freely roam” around, taking photos – and that he could easily have accessed military buildings.

A counter-terror expert warned the alleged incidents expose potential security flaws on Army bases that could be exploited by an “adversary or enemy”, reports the Mirror.

The 21-year-old man claims he is one of at least two civilians who have been driven onto Army sites in the boot of a car.

He told the Mirror: “I could well have roamed alone around the camp and gained access to buildings, most of which had minimal staff inside.

“Some buildings and accommodation blocks had broken security access controls awaiting repair.”

The man spoke out over fears the barracks could be vulnerable to “acts of espionage, intelligence leaks or the ever-present threat of terrorism”.

He claims he met the first soldier via a dating app and had a sexual encounter with him at Keogh Barracks in Aldershot, Hampshire, in November.

“He walked me through the back gates,” he said. “All he had to do was show military ID on camera – they buzzed me in. This was in the middle of a Covid lockdown.”

The soldier introduced him to a colleague with whom he then began a relationship.

This second soldier allegedly smuggled the man onto Tidworth Camp and Swinton Barracks in Wiltshire several times.

“He would pick me up at a nearby Tesco or a non-passholder car park at the camp, where I would climb into the boot,” he said. “Then we would drive to Tidworth or Swinton camps.”

The man said the soldier took him to local restaurants in Amesbury, made him microwave meals on base and even laundered his clothes in the shared washing machine.

On one occasion, he claims a second civilian was also smuggled in the boot to join them for drinks.

The MoD said: “The Army takes any breach of security extremely seriously and all reported breaches are investigated by the appropriate authority.

“As this matter is currently under investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
