climate as a top problem.
Apparently we also have a low opinion of our Government’s ability to act, and we are unsure about big personal adjustments. We are easily persuaded that we can carry on ‘business as usual’, and every step of the way seems contested.
Transport is a case in point: do we really prioritise climate friendly public transport, bikes and legs? Why are bus services often unavailable and many trains ruinously expensive?
Hireable e-bikes are fast and popular, but still few or non-existent for most of us. We now have some safe cycling options to useful places and not just for leisure, but as commuters most of us face incomplete cycle routes shared with scary cars resembling armoured vehicles. Is this a counsel of despair?
Irrespective of political party, is any clear-thinking politician really in favour of climate disaster? If we are going to support walking, cycling and zero-emission public transport then let’s do it properly instead of chipping at the edges.
Maybe we can look at ourselves and judge what it would take to get us out of our cars and into alternatives so good that many and maybe most people will be glad to use them. We can all look in the mirror and ask what that would be, then ask our councillors and MPs to deliver. Be brave and write! Will that stir opposition? Maybe but every wise forward-looking reform irritates someone. Can we make the world safe for our children and grandchildren? Just give us the tools. Dr Andrew Blewett,
Exeter hard to miss a house floating down your street. It’s high time we acted like grown-ups, took responsibility, and went vegan.
