Hargreaves favourite for job at Yeovil

-

departure of previous manager Darren Sarll to Woking at the end of March, and has turned down the opportunity to remain on the Huish Park coaching team.

Under Lee, the Glovers won one, drew five and lost two games in the National League, with senior player Josh Staunton taking charge of Sunday’s season finale against Altrincham as Yeovil triumphed 1-0 to finish the campaign 12th in the table.

A midfielder with more than 600 League appearances for Grimsby, Hull, Plymouth, Northampton, Brentford, Oxford and Torquay over a 20-year playing career, the majority of Hargreaves’ coaching experience has been spent with Rovers, but he has maintained a keen eye on the non-League scene.

He has been a columnist for the Non-League Paper and an analyst for BT Sport in their coverage of the National League.

Last month, Yeovil owner Scott Priestnall stated he had received “40 or 50 applications” for the post following the departure of Sarll. Former full-back Jamie McAllister, who had been Lee Johnson’s assistant at Bristol City and Sunderland, had been the fans favourite, taking 58 per cent of the vote in a recent poll.

However, the Scot is likely to follow Johnson to Hibernian, should the 40-year-old be named the new manager at Easter Road.

Hargreaves maintains a good relationship with Rovers boss Joey Barton, which could offer a loan destination for some of the Pirates’ young talent next season, as he will likely be overseeing a summer of change at Huish Park.

The 50-year-old’s son Cameron may be a target, with the younger Hargreaves having failed to break into Barton’s side, spending time at King’s Lynn and Chippenham during the past season.
