Blackstenius settles final in extra-time

-

STINA Blackstenius’ extra-time goal gave Arsenal a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the Continental Tyres League Cup final at Molineux, writes Rachel Steinberg.

Blues manager Emma Hayes is leaving the club at the end of the season and her hopes of the quadruple ended when Gunners forward Blackstenius netted with four minutes of extra-time left.

Earlier, play had been stopped in the sixth minute of added time when Arsenal’s Frida Maanum collapsed off the ball. She was treated by paramedics before being taken off on a stretcher.

The club later confirmed the 24-year-old Norwegian was conscious, talking and in a stable condition and would continue to be monitored closely by the club’s medical team.

Back on the pitch, just as it seemed the match was destined for spot-kicks, Blackstenius fired home to secure the defending champions what was their only hope at a trophy this season.

Chelsea had their chances in normal time, but it was the north Londoners that prevailed.

Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw scored twice as Manchester City moved three points clear at the top of the Women’s Super League with a 4-1 victory at Liverpool on Saturday.

Shaw scored the last two goals to seal a win that means City enter the international break on top.

Lauren Hemp and Jess Park put City two goals up before Shaw hit the goal of the game.

She added another in the second half before Taylor Hinds’ fine effort went in via the woodwork and City goalkeeper Khiara Keating.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Aston Villa and Leicester draw 2-2.

Adriana Leon put Villa in front before Yuka Momiki and Sam Tierney replied, but England star Rachel Daly grabbed the leveller.

In yesterday’s early game, Manchester United came from behind to beat Everton 4-1. Katja Snoeijs opened the scoring, but Millie Turner, Ella Toone (2) and Leah Galton turned things around.

Bristol City did not have a game this weekend and are now seven points adrift at the foot of the table after West Ham and Brighton played out a 0-0 draw.
