Student dies after basketball match

A UNIVERSITY student has died in hospital after collapsing during a basketball match.

Dom Newton was the captain of the basketball team at University of Wales Trinity Saint David, in Swansea.

Dom, who is understood to be from Bristol, was playing with the team on Monday night when he collapsed on the court.

He was a third-year product design and technology student, based at the Townhill campus.

Emergency services were called and he was rushed to hospital, where he later died.

A statement from the university said: “The university community is saddened by the news of the tragic death of one of our students.

“We offer our deepest sympathy and condolence­s to his family, friends and colleagues.

“Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this tragic event, and we would like to remind our students and staff that our profession­al student services team is available to offer support in confidence.”

A statement on the university Students’ Union’s Facebook page said: “All our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our Basketball Captain Dom Newton today, who tragically passed away last night.

“Dom was a big part of university life in Swansea and will be sorely missed.”
