More power from solar than coal

-

TV presenter Alex Jones has urged Wales to get physical to raise money for disadvantaged children and young people.

She will launch BBC Children in Need’s Do Your Thing fundraising campaign today with other famous faces from British entertainment including Matt Baker and Judy Murray.

Alex said: “This year, I want to see the people of Wales get out there and Do Your Thing for BBC Children in Need! You can dust off your trainers and trampettes to do your fitness thing, or get your friends together and break the world record for the longest dance-a-thon. All you need is a little imagination and you can make a real difference to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.”

In Wales, BBC Children in Need currently gives £8.4m to 159 projects.

Cardiff-based Safer Wales receives funding to provide a specialist service to young women who are, or who are at risk of being, sexually exploited.

And The Roots Foundation, in Swansea, receives funding to provide workshops and activities to support children at risk of exploitation. SOLAR panels generated more electricity in the UK than coal plants over the past six months, analysis shows. From April to September, solar power met 5.2% of demand – generating an estimated 6,964 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity – while coal accounted for 4.7% of UK demand with 6,342 GWh of power.

From July 1, solar outstripped coal for 10 weeks in a row, the analysis by the Carbon Brief website – which reports on climate science and energy policy – reveals.
