Farmer dies after being crushed by Land Rover
A FARMER has died after being crushed by his Land Rover.
Huw Smith was pronounced dead after the accident on his farm near Ruthin on Wednesday.
It is understood he had hoisted the vehicle up to check beneath it when it fell on top of him on his farm at Bac Eurig in Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd.
Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene just after 5.30pm.
Firefighters used air bags to lift the vehicle off the grandfather but he could not be saved.
Mr Smith’s family confirmed he had died after an accident involving his Land Rover.
His wife is secretary at Ysgol Pen Barras in Ruthin.
Chairman of governors, county councillor and former neighbour Huw Hilditch-Roberts said: “We are all shocked and saddened by the death of Huw and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this time.
“Huw was a very well-known character, he was a very supportive neighbour who loved the countryside and loved his work.
“He was extremely proud of the achievements his children had made. We send our condolences to the family.”
A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at about 5.35pm on Wednesday, February 8, to an incident in Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, near Ruthin.
“We sent two crews in emergency ambulances to the scene.”
A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “A crew from Mold and a crew from Ruthin attended and used air bags to lift the vehicle.”
A North Wales Police spokesman said: “We are not treating the incident as suspicious and the case will be passed on to the coroner.”
