Time for the Wales coaches to depart

- Jeffrey Davies Londonderry via Blaengwynfi

REMEMBER what I said about the All Blacks? We can’t beat ’em and now we can’t beat any decent opposition either.

Belief has departed Wales with Warren Garland. Rob Howley was an amazing player for Wales; let’s not forget his achievements. But he will never be an international coach that can make a difference: he lacks the gravitas and cut-throat edge required. He is too loyal to aged players and his team has appalling attack stats and are impotent against competitive teams.

Alun Wyn Jones has grit and intelligence but his leadership is suspect. He may grow into the job but presently he is coming up short. Wales should have hammered Scotland, but didn’t turn up in the second half. It deteriorated into a series of lamentable individual efforts as opposed to the joint enterprise of a cohesive team. You can’t defend your way to victory every game, you have keep possession and pose a credible attacking threat.

The midfield duo of Williams and Davies does not work. They are too slow and cannot create space. The tried and tested old soldier Jamie Roberts is past his sell-by date and is not an impact player. He can smash up opposition when he starts but in 20 minutes at the end of a game lacks pace and dynamism and is ineffective.

I am pleased Scotland won, they had belief in their attack and, boy, they were clinical when they got a chance.

Losing is unfortunately the only way Wales will change and bring in fresh blood. They need belief, two new centres and a coach that can create an attack.

So, Rob, it is time to go; it’s probably time for Garland to go too. I’ve never seen such nonsense as abandoning his day job for a Lions post, pathetic! They have had their day, it’s time to ring the changes.
