-

AROUND 1,500 people are expected to attend a memorial rugby match in honour of 20-year-old Elli Norkett.

Elli, from Llandarcy, Neath, died in a car crash on the A4109 Inter Valley Road between Banwen and Glynneath on February 25.

She was a studying sport development at Cardiff Met University and was a huge character in the women’s rugby team at the university.

The team had been due to play Loughborough University Rugby team yesterday, but this was deemed too soon and has been rearranged for tomorrow at 7pm.

A tribute to Elli is planned before the game which will involve Elli’s shirt placed on the halfway line and each member of the squad will drop a rose onto it. There will also be a minute’s silence and a book of condolence for staff and students.

Cerys Ballett is the team manager for the club. She said: “It is going to be massive, we didn’t expect it. Her shirt will be placed on the halfway line and all the squad will places roses on it.

“All the sports teams in the university are going to be there as well as staff. We know that 30 members of the family will be there and it is what Elli would have wanted.”

In a statement, Cardiff Met said: “Cardiff Met Women’s Rugby BUCS quarter-final match against Loughborough University has been rescheduled to take place Friday at Cyncoed Campus (Pitch 1). Elli’s family have confirmed that this is what she would have wanted.”
