Hound-ini Ollie seeks new home after latest escape bid

-

A GIANT mountain dog has been given away by his heartbroken owners after climbing onto their roof while they were out.

Ollie, a five-year-old Pyrenean Mountain Dog, is really in the doghouse after his latest “escape artist” antic up on their roof at Pontardawe, near Swansea.

The 9st pet has come down to earth with a bump because his exasperated owners have handed him over to a dogs charity to find him a new home.

Huw and Loretta Evans took the “difficult decision” to give Ollie up after admitting defeat against his love for adventure.

Firefighters were called to their home a month ago when Ollie managed to squeeze out of the loft window and got stuck on the roof of their three-storey townhouse.

They admitted they weren’t able to leave him alone for more than half an hour without him disappearing in the hunt for adventure.

The couple say that despite having three walks a day he was never satisfied and often broke loose.

Huw, 46, said: “Even if we popped to the shops Ollie would be plotting his escape. He’s so intelligent he can open the doors and has even mastered the child locks we installed on the windows.

“Often he’d get out and I’d have to ask the local taxi drivers to keep an eye out on their routes. It started off quite harmless but it’s a lot of worry as his owners and in time we realised Ollie wasn’t happy being so contained. When he couldn’t get out he’d get quite distressed and it was upsetting for us all.”

They hope the new owner will be able to cope with Ollie who measures 6ft when up on his back legs.

Loretta, 45, said: “We were completely heartbroken to give him up but I hope he finds an appropriate home soon where he’ll be happy.”

He is now being rehomed at the Dogs Trust centre in Bridgend in the hope a new home can be found. They describe him as a “big friendly giant who loves having a cuddle.”

But dogs home staff are keen to point out that Ollie’s next owner will need to be home most of the time and willing to take Ollie on long walks to tire him out.

A spokesman for the Dogs Trust centre said: “Ollie is a big friendly giant who loves having a cuddle. He needs a home who is around most of the day. After a long walk, Ollie is happy to curl up and sleep.”
