Cup-winning rugby player named as crash victim

-

A FORMER rugby player who once led his side to Welsh Cup glory has been named as the man killed in an accident on the A470.

Tributes were paid to Emrys Evans, who was described by his ex-club as “one of the best players it ever produced”.

Mr Evans, 40, died after the car he was driving was involved in a crash near Dolgellau on Sunday. Another man in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and has been discharged from hospital.

Mr Evans played for Nant Conwy RFC and was in the Llandovery squad, which won the Welsh Cup in 2007 when they beat Cardiff 20-18 in the final.

A Nant Conwy club spokesman said Emrys’ death had left the rugby community “astounded”.

He added: “He played his last matches for Nant Conwy (in) the last six matches of last season when both scrum-halves, Ifan and Cai, were out with long-term shoulder injuries.

“Apart from being one of the best players produced by Nant over its short existence, Emrys will be remembered fondly for how he surprised everyone in having a different hairstyle and colouring in every sort of ‘cup final’ that Nant took part in over the last five years or so!

“Everybody involved with Nant Conwy in any way extend their deep-felt sympathy and condolences with the families and friends of Emrys.”

Police closed the A470 for eight hours while emergency services worked at the scene.

North Wales Police are appealing for witnesses to call 101 quoting incident number V031151.
