Recycling plant operator has its licence suspended after blaze

-

ACTION has been taken against the operator of a waste storage facility where a 2,000-tonne rubbish fire has been burning for almost five days.

Fire crews were called to SiteServ Recycling, off Llanwit Major Road, Llandow, Vale of Glamorgan, on Thursday night.

Residents have been told to stay away and to keep their windows and doors closed following the fire, in which more than 2,000 tonnes of rubbish caught alight.

Yesterday, residents of St Donats were warned that the acrid smoke was likely to affect them.

The facility stores various forms of non-hazardous household, commercial and industrial waste, but there is not believed to be any asbestos at the site.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has now taken action and suspended the permit which allows the owners to import waste.

Nadia De Longhi, operations manager for NRW, said: “We have decided to suspend the importation of waste under the environmental permit for the regulated facility at Hangars A and B, off the Llanwit Major Road, Llandow, operated by SiteServ Recycling (SW) Ltd.”

The suspension notice will prevent more waste being taken to the site until “all residual risks to the environment and human health are reduced are far as practicable”.

Business owner Tony Evans, who runs the nearby Llandow Caravan Park, said: “This is the fourth fire in four years and we are concerned for the safety of our businesses and our caravans.”
