GAVIN Henson is coming home to Wales having signed a two-year deal with the Dragons.

The 35-year-old double Grand Slam winner will join the Men of Gwent this summer and insists he still has “loads to offer”.

The much-travelled Henson has been with Bristol for the past two seasons, but has now decided to move to Rodney Parade.

It will be his third Welsh region, following spells with the Ospreys and Cardiff Blues, while he also played one game for Llanelli as a youngster in the pre-regional era.

The hugely versatile Henson, who can cover fly-half, centre and full-back, says he is relishing the new challenge that lies ahead.

“I have really enjoyed my time here at Bristol but when the opportunity came along to join the Dragons and return to Wales, I couldn’t say no,” he said.

“I still have loads to offer and I know what Kingsley wants from me.

“I’m especially looking forward to pitting myself against the current Welsh players and hopefully becoming a catalyst and mentor for the tremendous talent that is in the Dragons squad.”

Head coach Kingsley Jones added: “This is a hugely important signing and exactly what we need to complement our existing squad.

“I am delighted that Gavin sees the potential within the Region and that he is excited about the prospect of assisting this group of Club/Regional 2000: Llanelli 2000–03: Swansea 2003–09: Ospreys 2010–11: Saracens 2011: Toulon 2011–12: Cardiff Blues 2012–13: London Welsh 2013–15: Bath 2015–17: Bristol International 2001-11: Wales (33 caps) 2005: British & Irish Lions (1 cap) backs with their development.

“Having worked with Gavin previously I am fully aware that he will bring critical experience on the field and inside the training environment.”

Dragons chief executive Stuart Davies commented: “It’s fantastic news for Dragons’ supporters and Welsh rugby in general that we are bringing back to Wales one of the finest players of a generation.

“I hope that securing the signature of one of the biggest names in the sport will give our supporters a timely lift and renewed hope for what next season might bring, when Gavin’s class and experience are added to the potential of our exciting back line.”

The announcement over Henson follows hot on the heels of the signing of 30 cap Springbok Zane Kirchner from Leinster.
