THERESA May will take to the conference stage in Cardiff today as she battles to hold back the push for Scottish independen­ce and prepares to start Brexit negotiatio­ns.

The Prime Minster will declare that while the UK consists of four nations “at heart we are one people”.

Launching a passionate defence of the United Kingdom, she will insist she has a “plan for Britain” which will lead to a “brighter future”.

Striking a confident note that this “precious” union will survive the challenges ahead, she will describe a country that people’s “grandchild­ren will be proud to call home”.

Her arrival in Wales comes in the same week that Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon called on Westminste­r to give the green-light to a second independen­ce referendum, warning that the UK Government had failed to take on board Scotland’s priorities in the preparatio­ns for Brexit.

Her Government’s handling of talks about leaving the EU have also come under attack from Welsh Government Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford, who said that a “pejorative” view would be that the body establishe­d for inter-government discussion­s was a vehicle for “suppressin­g difficult issues rather than addressing and engaging with them”.

However, Mrs May will pledge that Welsh voices will be represente­d in the Brexit negotiatio­ns.
