THERESA May will take to the conference stage in Cardiff today as she battles to hold back the push for Scottish independence and prepares to start Brexit negotiations.
The Prime Minster will declare that while the UK consists of four nations “at heart we are one people”.
Launching a passionate defence of the United Kingdom, she will insist she has a “plan for Britain” which will lead to a “brighter future”.
Striking a confident note that this “precious” union will survive the challenges ahead, she will describe a country that people’s “grandchildren will be proud to call home”.
Her arrival in Wales comes in the same week that Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon called on Westminster to give the green-light to a second independence referendum, warning that the UK Government had failed to take on board Scotland’s priorities in the preparations for Brexit.
Her Government’s handling of talks about leaving the EU have also come under attack from Welsh Government Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford, who said that a “pejorative” view would be that the body established for inter-government discussions was a vehicle for “suppressing difficult issues rather than addressing and engaging with them”.
However, Mrs May will pledge that Welsh voices will be represented in the Brexit negotiations.
