Anew charity Welsh music compilation album is released this week showcasing a diverse selection of independent music makers.

TIDY is the brainchild of Scottie and Nick who run the South Wales valleysbased All Systems Go Records.

The pair, who describe themselves as “two old fat bald punk rockers”, both played in bands in the ’80s – Scottie as frontman of Symbol of Freedom and Nick as singer with The Abnormal.

They decided to launch the label six years ago after “many drunken discussions about the DIY ethics of punk”, and to set up a non-profit label to promote local bands.

“We kept packaging as basic as possible for two reasons – to retain a DIY feel and and more importantly because they had no money,” said Scottie.

“Our first release was by a mod band called This Working Way, quickly followed by a release by solo artist Skalett, the former selling out and reissue, which also sold out. Plenty of mistakes and changes were made over the following years, which saw us releasing CDs by The Oppressed,The Evil Turkeys and more.

“After a while we got into the swing of things a bit better and have released CDs by up and coming bands and artists including very talented Welsh musicians Chris Phillips and The Riff.

“Funnily enough, though, our most successful release was by the only English band we have worked with so far, The Stiff Joints, whose limited edition EP sold out in three days.”

Now the label is focusing on the release of TIDY, a 21-track compilation featuring the likes of The Lost And Found, The Tinmen, Local Enemy, The Riff, Chris Phillips, Rebecca Riot and Dodgem X, that Scottie said has “been put together to show the talent and diversity of Welsh music that sometimes goes unheard”.

“As the label became more well known we got requests from lots of bands to release their CDs, 90% of which were tidy. Obviously we couldn’t release them all but we did think they deserved to be heard.

“Going back to our own brief brush with rock ’n’ roll stardom we remembered a tape that my band, Symbol of Freedom, had appeared on called There Is More To Wales Than Male Voice Choirs.

“It featured a very varied mixture of music but it worked. Not only in sales but by the bands on the tape getting to know each other and doing joint gigs The beauty of that was you would get a hardcore anarchist band doing a gig with a new romantic band and lots of other combinations So we set about trying to recreate this type of CD using the bands that had contacted us and putting feelers out for other genres “The result is TIDY.” And if you were wondering about the choice of TIDY as the title of the album...

“When one of us asked the other what we thought of a track they would answer ‘tidy’,” said Scottie.

“I’m sure the next comp we do will be TIDY TOO.”

TIDY – a showcase of Welsh Independent music is available via eBay priced £5.
