New beginning as world hasn’t ended
THE “Dear Don” letter has been sent and the world, as we know it, has not come to an end.
True, it has started raining, but there is nothing new in that. I voted to join the Common Market many years ago, thinking it was a good idea.
What, I suspect, a good many others did not bargain for was that this would morph into a powerhungry monster bent on expansion and the formation of a superstate. Some have done really well from the EU, but many have been left behind.
Globalisation has been allowed to run unchecked, with very few attempts made to alleviate its downside for ordinary people. The EU, in my opinion, faces serious problems with little indication that it intends to solve them. I would suggest hubris, a “one-sizefits-all” Eurozone and a chronic, collective inability to counter mass, uncontrolled migration.
There is a serious difference between the fortunes of its wealthier northern states and the poorer southern states with their mass youth unemployment. No-one can blame those with power and influence from making the most of their opportunities, but what I find unforgivable is that some of our political leaders took it upon themselves to nearly give this country away.
I hope this is a new beginning. It is in all our interests that trade and co-operation with our European neighbours will continue. It has been a revealing exercise.
