Swans can stay up... but it will be close, says Tosh

SWANSEA City great John Toshack has backed the club to beat the drop this season – but admits it is likely go right down to the wire.

Paul Clement’s side are one point and one place above the Premier Leage dropzone ahead of tonight’s game against titlechasing Tottenham at the Liberty.

A frustrating draw against Middlesbrough last time out kept Swansea right in the mix at the wrong end of the Premier League table, and coupled with unexpected results elsewhere meant the pressure has cranked up another notch.

But Toshack, who like Clement worked at footballing giants Real Madrid, feels the SA1 side will escape relegation.

“I think it will go right to the wire,” said Toshack (above) as he officially opened the club’s £10.5m training base at Fairwood.

“Usually one of the teams which look comfortable drops into it in the last fortnight or so. They think they’re safe and all of a sudden a couple of bad results come and they find with a few games to go they’re in trouble.

“This is when they earn their money. As Bill Shankly used to say, you pay your bill for the meal after the dessert, not after the first or second course.

“We’ve just got to hope Swansea have got enough to get over the line.

“There’s maybe a team five or six points above Swansea who could also dip into it. We just need to be confident and keep our fingers crossed.”
