Carriageway in city to be resurfaced once again

-

A MAJOR dual carriageway is to be resurfaced for the second time in a year after contractors’ work failed the first time round.

The new road surface is being laid along the A4067 between the Liberty Stadium and junction 45 of the M4.

Swansea Council has drafted in contractors to carry out the work after a similar job completed along the route in August last year had, according to the local authority, failed to adhere to the road surface sufficiently.

Stuart Davies, the authority’s head of highways and transportation, said: “It’s very rare for this type of treatment not to provide the quality of road surface we expect when it is completed, and when we reviewed the original work we found the treatment had not taken sufficiently.

“We believe a drop in road temperature at the time created the problem.

“Our contractors are returning at no extra cost to the council to complete the work so that the improvements meet our expected standard.”

Drivers are now being urged by Swansea Council to drive slowly as the highway improvement works take place.

The work, which is likely to start next week, subject to favourable weather, means sections of the road will be closed overnight during a ten-day period to put down the surface dressing.

Mr Davies added: “We are carrying out the works overnight so there is minimum disruption.

“Lower speed limits will be in place where the surface treatment has been laid and we would urge motorists to observe the lower speed.

“Our aim is to prolong the life of the road and make it safer for motorists.”
