Street marshals could soon be trialled on busy promenade

-

STREET marshals could be on the beat along Mumbles promenade this summer.

The plan is to trial them at weekends between the end of July and the beginning of September.

The team behind them says they would answer tourists’ questions, give advice about local events and activities, help prevent anti-social behaviour, disperse gangs of youths if required, deal with missing children and provide first aid.

They would also clean up litter and graffiti, or let Swansea Council know about it, and report damaged property.

It is still early days but Paul Whittaker, of Mumbles Traders’ Association, said he believed the marshal idea had traction and that it could come to fruition.

“Marshals will not only sort out incidents but will also be the eyes and ears of Mumbles,” he said.

“We have the backing of local organisations like Mumbles Development Trust and the community council has agreed to support this.

“We have also contacted PCSOs (police community support officers). We hope to finalise the project for a trial this summer.”

The marshals could also patrol from 9am until 5pm on particularly busy days.

Mr Whittaker said a security company was keen to provide trained staff for the roles, which would be similar to the city-centre rangers in Swansea.

“The traders’ association feel this scheme would make Mumbles a better and safer place to visit, work and live in,” he said.
