Disappointing Dragons fall to yet another home defeat

-

WREXHAM slumped to another disappointing Racecourse defeat yesterday, beaten with something to spare by visitors Maidstone United for whom success banished any lingering fears of relegation.

The Dragons, who have now taken just two points from their last seven matches, last won in front of their own fans at the end of January and despite taking an early lead against the Stones, they fell away badly as the contest developed.

Both sides had early chances, the Dragons threatening through Paul Rutherford, who shot tamely at keeper Lee Worgan before the visitors won a corner from which Magnus Okuonghae steered a header wide.

But it was Wrexham who drew first blood, Jordan White’s ninthminute header from a Rutherford cross proving too powerful for Worgan, who could only help the ball into his own net.

The goal provoked a positive reaction from the Stones and home goalkeeper Shwan Jalal saved twice in quick succession from Alex Flisher before the visitors deservedly drew level on the half-hour through Joe Pigott.

Wrexham’s frailties at the back were exposed once more after 52 minutes when Jamar Loza was allowed to run into the penalty box and beat Jalal at his near post with a low drive.

The home side’s woes were compounded by a missed penalty, Worgan saving the 63rd-minute spot-kick by Anthony Barry just a minute after he had come off the bench to replace Iffy Allen.

But the visitors had the final word and wrapped up the points seven minutes from time with another simple goal, the unmarked Flisher heading Jack Paxman’s corner kick past a helpless Jalal.
