WALES wing hopeful Ashton Hewitt is still suffering from headaches after almost four months out with concussion problems.

The 22-year-old Dragons speedster hasn’t played since facing the Ospreys on New Year’s Day and there is no date pencilled in for his return.

Renowned as one of the quickest players in Welsh rugby, Hewitt, pictured above, was named in Rob Howley’s Six Nations squad after an electrifying first half to the season.

But he was released back to the Dragons after reporting for duty at Wales’ Vale of Glamorgan headquarters with signs of concussion.

Months on, he is still not fully recovered and is unlikely to feature again this season, ruling him out of contention for the Welsh summer tour of the South Seas.

Dragons coach Kingsley Jones says it’s now just a case of waiting until the youngster is symptom free.

“It’s a very sensitive thing and we have to make sure players are correct,” he said. “Some players go through the tests and pass them and then they still have symptoms, which means headaches and stuff after physical training.

“All we can do, I guess, is wait until the player is symptom free.

“With Ashton, it’s just he wakes up with a headache after a bit of training or a slight headache.

“It’s not that he’s in pain I don’t think, but he has to be symptom free and it can take a while.

“I have been asked is it end of his career. Who knows? We have seen Adam Hughes come back and lots of other players have.

“But it’s a sensitive situation and it has to be right. We have got to make sure he is 100 per cent comfortable and feeling great.

“You can’t take a risk with things like this.

“Ashton is working hard, he’s in the environment every day. It’s not like he’s sat at home twiddling his thumbs. He’s fit and he’s able to take part in training, but he hasn’t been able to back up a full day’s training yet.”
