Dad died after fall downstairs through loose baby gate

-

A FATHER died after a tragic accident when a baby’s safety gate gave way at the top of stairs.

An inquest heard Jason Morgan, 43, a keen amateur boxer, pulled on the metal gate, which came loose.

Father of two Jason, a windowcleaner, lost his footing and fell down the stairs.

After his death Jason’s family gave the go-ahead for his organs to be used for transplantation.

His family said they had taken “great comfort” that four people had been given “a fighting chance” after his kidneys, liver and pancreas were donated.

His brother, Darren, 40, said after the hearing: “Jason was a gentle giant who spent his life helping people. His family are missing him badly.”

Jason suffered “catastrophic” head injuries and died a week later when his life support system was turned off.

The amateur boxer and weightlifter had been out celebrating his birthday with friends on the night of the tragedy in January.

He was in his sister’s home, where he went upstairs to the bathroom.

His sister, Theresa Peters, told the hearing: “Jason had yanked the baby gate, which had become loose. We heard a noise and found him at the bottom of the stairs.”

The inquest heard that the house in Ystradgynlais, near Swansea, had a downstairs toilet but Jason used the upstairs one due to “force of habit”.

Jason was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where surgeons operated to relieve pressure on his brain, but he died in intensive care on January 22.

The cause of death was a traumatic brain injury. South Wales Central coroner Andrew Barclay recorded an accidental verdict.
