Wait goes on over Ponty pitch tests

-

IT is still unclear whether or not Sardis Road is fit to stage a game of full contact rugby, writes Matthew Southcombe.

Pontypridd RFC have been forced to prepare contingency plans with a huge match against RGC due to take place at the venue this Saturday.

The winner of the match will claim a spot in the end-of-season play-offs, with the loser missing out.

The artificial surface, that was installed last summer, has come under the microscope after a number of Merthyr RFC players suffered burns while playing on the pitch.

Some players needed antibiotics to treat the burns and some missed the game the following week as a result.

Tests will be carried out on the surface throughout the week and a decision on whether or not it is playable will be made on Thursday.

“With further extensive tests to be carried out on the 3G playing surface at Sardis Road this week, Pontypridd RFC remain hopeful that the home Premiership match against RGC can be staged there on Saturday 6th May,” read a statement from Pontypridd RFC.

“Testing on the pitch will take place on Tuesday and Thursday, with a final decision to be made on Thursday whether a full contact game of rugby can take place.

“The club is making contingency plans to utilise another venue if needed, but remain hopeful that the green light will be given to resume playing rugby at Sardis Road.

“Numerous and extensive tests have been carried out on the playing surface, and discussions held with various bodies including the pitch manufacturers, the WRU and World Rugby, since initial complaints were made by Merthyr RFC players and coaches a month ago.”
