Drunk slashed-artery patient who abused and attacked hospital staff is jailed
A PATIENT at Morriston A&E who bit and kicked security guards and swore at and abused medics who were treating him has been jailed.
An intoxicated Christian Magrin had been rushed to casualty after slashing the main artery in his wrist when he fell into and smashed a snake tank – but then he turned on the staff who were helping him.
Swansea Crown Court heard 27-year-old Magrin was initially “compliant and co-operative”, but quickly became aggressive, verbally abusing medics and other patients in A&E. He then tried to stop medics treating him, and became so aggressive and abusive hospital security staff and police had to be called.
Dean Pulling, prosecuting, said Magrin sank his teeth into the bicep of one of the security guards, and then kicked another as they tried to restrain him. By the time he was subdued – the court heard he “effectively lost consciousness” – he had lost a third of the blood in his body.
Magrin, of Alexandra Road, Gorseinon, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and to common assault when he appeared in the dock.
Robin Rouch, for Magrin, said his client’s recollection of the events in A&E was “hazy”.
Judge Paul Thomas QC sentenced him to 18 months for actual bodily harm and three months for common assault, both sentences to run concurrently.
