ABERAVON ...................... 31 BEDWAS ........................... 24

ABERAVON will shoot it out with Merthyr to be champions of Wales this weekend after they overcame Bedwas in their Premiership Tier One play-off clash.

It was the visitors who started strongly as their outside-half Richard Powell gave them a fourth minute lead with a penalty.

The Wizards hit back with a magical try, conjured by outside-half James Garland who tore through the visiting defence before feeding wing Matthew Jenkins who finished in style. Garland converted.

The hosts were further ahead soon after when Rowan Jenkins romped home from an overthrown lineout. Garland added the extras to put his side 11 points in the lead.

Powell drilled over a long-range penalty to put Bedwas back in it. Then Nicky Griffiths made no mistake when he scored a spectacular solo try, an impressive conversion by Powell from the touchline made it 14-13 after 26 minutes.

And the deadly fly-half regained the lead for his side just before half-time when he drilled over another tricky penalty.

Bedwas stretched their advantage early in the second half when wing Matthew John scored an unconverted try following a fine break by replacement centre Adam Williams.

The Wizards battered the visitors’ try-line and tighthead prop Matthew Pettit was yellow carded for infringing.

The home side took advantage immediately when his opposite number Alex Jeffries finished well in the corner, Garland’s conversion made it 21-21.

Powell was on target in the 59th minute to nose his team back into the lead only for Garland to cancel it out almost immediately.

Lock Ben Davies brought the house down after he crossed with 10 minutes to go for a converted try after great work by Thomas. Aberavon: Tries: M Jenkins, R Jenkins, A Jeffries, B Davies, Cons: J Garland (4); Pen: J Garland. Bedwas: Tries: N Griffiths, M John, Con: R Powell; Pens: R Powell (4).
