Looking for those who go to GP to get dental help

-

THOUSANDS of people every week across the UK are turning to their GP instead of their dentist when they experience problems with their teeth, it is claimed.

The British Dental Association (BDA) says increasing charges for NHS dental care mean many patients are forced to consult a doctor instead.

Basic check-ups, also known as band 1 treatments, in Wales increased from £13.50 to £14 on April 1.

Costs for band 2 treatments, such as fillings, went up by £1 from £43 to £44, while band 3 treatments like crowns, dentures and bridges increased from £185 to £190.

The BDA are now calling for more funding for NHS dentistry to help people in financial hardship and reduce the burden on GP surgeries.

To look into this further, researchers at Cardiff University are undertaking a study to discover how big a problem this is in Wales and the rest of the UK.

The Seeking Care study, in partnership with dentists from the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, is currently recruiting UK adults who have been to see their GP with a problem in their teeth or gums in the last 12 months.

The study follows previous Cardiff University research which showed that more than half of patients who consult their GP when experiencing a dental problem are unlikely to receive the most appropriate treatment for their condition.

Dr Anwen Cope, who is leading the research, said: “Research shows that as many as 7,500 people a week visit their GP rather than a dentist when experiencing dental problems.

“In reality a lot is still unknown about the reasons why patients may go to see their doctor instead of a dentist.

“While some patients may be put off by the price, there may be others who are too anxious to step into a dental surgery.

“Furthermore some patients may want to see a dentist but can’t due to inflexible working hours or lack of transport.

“These are some of the factors that we hope to explore in the Seeking Care study.”
