Margam chef wins Asian food award

-

CURRY addicts searching for their next spicy fix might want to think about visiting Neath Port Talbot.

A chef at an Indian restaurant in Port Talbot has recently been named one of the best Asian and Oriental chefs in the UK at an awards ceremony in London.

Abdul Kadir, chef at The Grand Sultan, on Water Street in Margam, picked up the award at a special ceremony hosted by the Asian Catering Federation, which honoured the country’s best Asian and Oriental chefs in the House of Commons on May 15.

The federation, which represents the nation’s 35,000 curry restaurants and takeaways, invited the public to vote for their favourite curry chefs.

Abdul was named in a shortlist of the top 30, and now a panel of judges, led by the Cobra Good Curry Guide editor Pat Chapman, will taste each chef’s cooking before deciding on two overall winners.

The evening was attending by an impressive array of VIPs and dignitaries including the High Commissioners of Bangladesh and Nepal, Lord and Lady Sheikh.

It has been quite the start for The new Grand Sultan restaurant at Lakeside golf course in Margam which recently opened to great reviews – enjoying enthusiastic support from locals, and from people who make special journeys to eat there.

For some, the appeal is the kitchen’s assured renditions of familiar dishes such as korma or madras, but other customers come for chef’s specials, which would be hard, if not impossible, to find anywhere else in the area.

The restaurant is now looking forward to cooking up some truly unique food for guests over the summer period.
