ICANNOT wait for the Pro12 final and I simply cannot wait to see if the Scarlets can do it again. I’ll be on the edge of my seat willing on a Welsh side to win the Pro12.

I watch a lot of rugby; if I’m not at the ground I’ll see it on the box.

And I enjoy watching two teams battling against each other and finding a way to win.

Modern sides are so well organised and discipline­d and it’s hard not to be impressed by their structures and the meticulous preparatio­n.

However, watching the Scarlets is not an exercise in the cerebral appreciati­on of the technical aspects of the game, it stimulates more primitive emotions.

Watching the Scarlets is thrilling, exciting and they produce moments which actually lifts your spirits.

Profession­al rugby has improved standards beyond recognitio­n, but there is a uniformity of ideology that has descended across the game.

All too often it is rugby by numbers and, despite each side having their own particular nuances, it all looks roughly the same. They all try and get a good exit, play in the right areas and go through the phases.

But that’s not what excites me about rugby. What captured my heart as a child, what I dreamed of doing was not being part of a perfectly-formed kick-chase; it was beating a man, creating a chance and scoring a try.

And in the modern-day world of defensive coaches and kicking strategies, those moments of inspiratio­n are all too fleeting.

You can’t coach these moments, you can’t practice them, all you can do is equip players with the fundamenta­l skills and then encourage them to have freedom to express themselves.

I am of the opinion that effort and tenacity are a given. All profession­al rugby players should give it their all. They should be able to stick to the patterns they’ve been working on all week and they should be able to repeat these phases time after time.

The Scarlets have been praised all week for their defensive effort and tenacity. Rightly so, because it was instrument­al to the victory, especially when down to 14 men.
